Joe Galuszka’s latest single, “Requiem for Mum,” brings a cinematic and deeply human quality to contemporary classical music. The Bristol-based British-Polish composer has released the track ahead of his debut EP, Fractures, with the piece serving as a moving tribute to his late mother. From its conception to its final recording, the single is shaped by grief, memory and resilience.

The piece has unusually direct origins. Galuszka first wrote and performed “Requiem for Mum” at his mother’s funeral, making it a composition born from lived experience rather than abstraction. Over time, it has evolved into a broader artistic statement, one that reflects not just private sorrow but the enduring emotional bond that remains after loss. Galuszka has said the work is about holding on to memory and finding strength in it.

That emotional focus is matched by a carefully crafted production. Recorded with The Bristol Ensemble, the track draws on the orchestra’s experience across broadcast, animation and film while preserving a strong sense of intimacy. The performance begins with restraint and vulnerability, then gradually opens into a fuller sound as its motifs develop. Mixed by Alex Garden and mastered by Nick Cooke, the recording maintains both refinement and emotional directness.

The single is also accompanied by visuals directed by emerging filmmaker Giles Pitman, extending the reflective tone of the music into a visual form. As Fractures continues to unfold through singles released across 2025 and 2026, “Requiem for Mum” stands as a key moment in the project’s emotional arc. It is a significant release for Galuszka and a compelling introduction to a composer working with sincerity, depth and clear artistic purpose.
