UK drummer and songwriter Garry ‘Magpie’ Bowler returns to the music scene with a compelling new single, ‘The In Crowd’—a powerful reinterpretation of the Billy Page classic. This new version not only pays homage to the power of original music but also serves as a heartfelt tribute to Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister, whose influence continues to echo through the industry. The timing is particularly poignant as 2025 will mark a decade since Lemmy’s passing.

Bowler’s connection to the hard rock world runs deep—he was invited to participate in Motörhead’s recording sessions for what would become part of their acclaimed ‘March Or Die’ album. For ‘The In Crowd’, Magpie assembled an exceptional line-up with direct ties to Lemmy’s world: Alan Davey (ex-Hawkwind) handles bass duties, Wayne Kramer of MC5 delivers guitars, and Girlschool’s Enid Williams steps up as vocalist. Each brings their own unique history, infusing the track with authenticity and depth.

The recording process began with a rare approach—Bowler laid down a solo drum track first, allowing each musician to build upon the groove with their own personal flair. Wayne Kramer, whose guitar work with MC5 was seminal to the formation of bands like Motörhead and the Ramones, joined the project after hearing only the rhythm section. His contribution to this session would, sadly, be one of his last—a fact that underscores the project’s emotional gravity.

Enid Williams, as the frontwoman of Girlschool, adds yet another layer of relevance. Girlschool’s own history is closely intertwined with Motörhead, and Williams’ vocals provide a distinctive, powerful finish to the track. ‘The In Crowd’ stands as both a salute to musical innovation and a rallying call for everyone who believes in the power of original music.
